Trip to National Museum of Singapore

You would think that being an SMU Accountancy student would mean that I visit the NMS very often, since the buildings are adjacent. But no, today was only the third time I stepped into NMS, second time for viewing the galleries. It took a special day like today, plus two very free souls to visit NMS and it was a worthwhile trip. :)

What greeted us when we entered was a huge statue (8.5m high) of David. Fwah! He was a pink naked giant!

We went to the Singapore History Gallery as well as the 4 Singapore Living Galleries. I think the Living Galleries are the most interesting.

The samfoo in the Fashion gallery caught my attention. I now appreciate the feminity of our grandmothers who wore the figure-cutting sams and drawstring foos that showed off their curves.

Elegance for the common folk.

Ah, the pretty mandarin collar! You may think I’m crazy but I’m so inspired and just might tailor a samfoo for myself. Might. Perhaps something more modern:

When we entered the Food gallery, I thought my head was playing tricks on me. Yes, it’s a gallery about food, but there is no real food displayed in the museum, so I can’t possibly be smelling the fried hawker food that I was smelling right? I think my head wasn’t playing tricks cos Zw smelt it too. I think it’s some subtle aroma that the gallery is infused in. Plus the frying/sizzling sounds and sounds of slurping/eating and the clanging of utensils as background sounds in the gallery… It really made this experience a very interesting and hungry one. :P

If you’re a very free soul and can resist the sights, sounds and smells of Singapore food, visit the NMS! You won’t be disappointed. What’s more, uni students enter for FREE!!

With love.
